PLEASE NOTE: The IPSL Scotland program will be offered as a core program in Fall 2008 only. Beginning in Fall 2009, customized programs in Scotland will be offered for college and university and other groups. If you are an individual student looking for a semester or summer program, please explore other IPSL programs. Feel free to call us to discuss program options.
Though part of the United Kingdom, Scotland is a distinct nation with its own culture and history. In parts of the Highlands and Islands one can still hear the language of Gaelic in everyday use. Since 1999, Scotland has had its own Parliament, which has allowed new forms of governance to emerge. Through academic studies and direct experience serving in Glasgow, you will be immersed in Scottish culture and society while learning about contemporary British social issues. Both cosmopolitan and distinctly Scottish in character, Glasgow is one of Europe's great cultural centers. It is also the gateway to some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery, including the Western Isles and the Highlands.
You will spend the fall semester at the University of Glasgow, studying Scottish social issues and citizenship, and taking two electives from the university offerings; living in university housing in the city; and engaging in substantive community service for 10 hours per week. Your volunteer service immerses you in the culture and deepens your understanding of Scottish society in a way that goes beyond that experienced in traditional study abroad programs. Please note that the IPSL Scotland program is offered in the fall semester only.
